A first-of-its-kind destination dedicated to American Mahjong is preparing to open its doors in the North Shore.

The Hidden Parlor Society is expected to debut in August 2026 on Park Street in downtown Andover, according to a press release. Designed as a private, members-only clubhouse, the 3,800-square-foot space will accommodate up to 44 members. Its exact address will only be shared with members and serious prospective members.

For those unfamiliar, American Mahjong is a four-player tile game in which players race to complete one of the winning hands listed on an official, annually updated scorecard. Unlike traditional Chinese Mahjong, the American version is more structured, relying on racks, Joker tiles, and the scorecard to determine all valid winning hands.

The Hidden Parlor Society will offer a dedicated parlor for open play, reserved tables, leagues, tournaments, lessons, and guided sessions, welcoming everyone from longtime enthusiasts to complete beginners. No prior experience is required, and instruction will be available for new players learning the game.

According to Andover News, the club will honor Mahjong’s Chinese origins while celebrating the generations of players—including Jewish American communities—who helped shape the uniquely American version of the game.

Beyond the tables, a thoughtfully curated boutique will offer American Mahjong and lifestyle brands alongside exclusive Hidden Parlor Society merchandise, including tiles, mats, racks, National Mah Jongg League cards, accessories, apparel, gifts, and seasonal finds. The club also plans to host retreats, guest evenings, floral design workshops, and other social events designed to foster community beyond game night.

“At a time when genuine human connection is increasingly difficult to find, The Hidden Parlor seeks to revive the art of gathering,” said Founding General Manager Heather Forrest Gagnon, who oversees the club’s operations, programming, hospitality, and day-to-day member experience. “Through open play, leagues, lessons, tournaments, retreats, and social events, we create opportunities for people to slow down, engage with one another, and become part of a vibrant community.”

Memberships are released in small batches to maintain the club’s intimate atmosphere and are offered in four tiers following the traditional Mahjong wind tiles (East, South, West, and North). Those interested in joining the Society can submit a Membership Inquiry Form or contact [email protected] to inquire about membership.

Before the club officially opens, members may also be invited to small gatherings and community events as The Hidden Parlor Society begins to take shape.
