Edo Japan, a Canadian fast-casual restaurant specializing in teppanyaki-style Japanese cuisine, is preparing to open a new location in Toronto at The Tenor, near the intersection of Yonge Street and Dundas Street.
The company’s second downtown Toronto location is set to open in December at The Tenor, following construction beginning in July and a planned landlord handover in September, according to 6ix Retail. The restaurant will join The Tenor’s growing food lineup, which includes Shake Shack, Eggslut, and Mary Brown’s Chicken.
The new restaurant follows Edo Japan’s first downtown Toronto location at Yonge and College, which opened in 2024. The company used that location as a test for its street-front downtown format before deciding to continue expanding in the city.
Edo Japan is also exploring additional Toronto locations in areas including Bloor, King West, and Queen West, with future expansion being considered for Roncesvalles, Bloor West Village, and the Danforth. The company currently operates nearly 220 restaurants across Canada.
Founded in 1979 by Reverend Susumu Ikuta, Edo Japan has grown from its original Calgary location into a national franchise brand. The company focuses on teppanyaki cooking, sushi, and Japanese-inspired meals prepared for customers. According to Maginniss, 18 of Edo Japan’s top 25 performing restaurants are located in shopping centers.
The menu at Edo Japan includes teriyaki bowls, sushi rolls, poke bowls, noodle dishes, ramen, bento boxes, and sides such as gyoza and tempura shrimp. The company’s newer restaurant layouts are designed to support both dine-in customers and takeout orders, with delivery and takeout accounting for nearly half of sales at some urban locations.
