Pronto Gelato is opening a second Portland location at 232 NE 28th Avenue, with co-owner George Kaden confirming to What Now Portland that the shop is aiming for an October 1 opening. The space had sat empty since Staccato Gelato closed last April, and Kaden said the team feels lucky to keep gelato going in a spot with two decades of history on that block.
“We’re really happy that we can continue serving gelato in the space that’s been serving gelato for the past twenty years”. Kaden told What Now.
The new location will keep the same gelato lineup but add something the original spot does not have, according to Kaden. “We’re gonna expand the coffee side of our brand,” he said, with plans for a full cafe running during the day alongside the gelato counter.
According to Bridgetown Bites, Pronto Gelato began as a partnership between Kaden, who also runs the Italian restaurant Campana in the Woodlawn neighborhood, and Andrea Spella of Spella Caffè. The two connected in 2017 when Campana started using Spella’s coffee beans. In 2023, they acquired an Eugene-based gelato company after its owner retired, moving the operation to Portland and opening their first location, a walk-up window at NE 42nd Avenue and Alberta Street, in May 2025.
