Dick’s House of Sport, the experiential retail concept from Dick’s Sporting Goods, is taking over the long-vacant former Sears space at Crabtree Valley Mall at 4325 Glenwood Ave, with a target opening in fall 2026. The Sears store closed in 2018, and the building has sat empty ever since, after earlier plans for a 43 story tower on the site never materialized.

Dick’s House of Sport stores go well beyond a typical sporting goods retailer, featuring amenities like rock climbing walls, HitTrax batting cages, and in some locations, outdoor fields or ice rinks, along with dedicated House of Cleats displays and golf pro shops. The Crabtree Valley project includes partial demolition, new exterior entry features and interior construction, with Ohio based architecture and planning firm Fox Design Group hired for the buildout.

This will mark the first Dick’s House of Sport location in Raleigh, joining a similar project already in the works at Durham’s Streets at Southpoint, also inside a former Sears building. Currently, Fayetteville holds the only Dick’s House of Sport in the state, according to the company’s website.

Headquartered near Pittsburgh, Dick’s Sporting Goods has plans to open 18 new House of Sport stores nationwide this year, with construction already starting on 20 more projected for 2026, backed by a billion dollar investment in the format’s expansion. More than 20 locations were already operating as of March.
