IKEA is closing its small-format store in San Marcos. The company said that it has decided not to renew the lease as part of its broader U.S. strategy. IKEA has also recommended that customers in the area check out its larger stores.
IKEA to Close San Marcos Store
IKEA has announced that it will be closing its small-format store in San Marcos on November 1. The store operates at 917 SH-80 N., at San Mar Plaza. The closure of the store comes just over a year after it opened in July 2025.
The San Marcos location was designed as a smaller alternative to IKEA’s traditional warehouse-style stores. According to a My San Antonio article, when the store opened, it featured more than 2,500 products on display and about 2,000 products available for immediate purchase. Customers could also order IKEA’s full range for delivery and pickup.
The small-format concept was intended to give customers another way to shop IKEA outside its traditional large-format stores. The concept brought a smaller IKEA showroom closer to customers while maintaining access to the company’s broader product selection.
Factors Behind the Decision
According to IKEA’s official statement, the company decided not to renew the lease of the San Marcos store. IKEA said the decision is part of its broader U.S. strategy. Meanwhile, the company will continue to test different ways for customers to shop while investing in home delivery, pickup services, and its online experience.
IKEA is directing San Marcos customers to its larger stores in Houston, Webster, Round Rock, and Live Oak to customers. Customers can also shop at IKEA locations inside Best Buy stores in Humble, South Austin, and Alamo Ranch.
The closure will end IKEA’s small-format store operation in San Marcos after just over a year. Customers can continue shopping IKEA through its larger-area stores, delivery services, and online platform.
