Winn-Dixie, the grocery store chain known across Florida and Georgia, is preparing for a homecoming in Zephyrhills, at the Westgate Shopping Center.
The space located at 4840 Allen Road, previously home to Big Lots, will be home to a new Winn-Dixie, set to open in the coming months, as Albertsons Florida Blog wrote earlier this year. However, that’s not the whole story.
“That former Big Lots building isn’t a stranger to being a supermarket, as from 1983-1997, it was home to a Winn-Dixie!” the blog says. “Winn-Dixie opened in Zephyrhills’ Westgate Shopping Center in October 1983, joining other anchor tenants Wal-Mart, Bealls, and Eckerd Drugs. Westgate was the first major shopping center constructed on Zephyrhills’ west side, straying away from the city’s traditional retail corridor along Gall Boulevard stretching northward from downtown. Zephyrhills’ west side was just starting to blossom with new development in the early 1980’s, especially mobile home communities targeted to retirees, and Westgate was looking to take advantage of this new population boom.”
Now, Westgate is home to businesses like Dice’s Dairy N Dogs, Dollar Tree, Life’s Treasures, Ace Hardware, and more.
A representative of Winn-Dixie has confirmed plans for a new Zephyrhills store with What Now, but has not yet confirmed the location. Stay tuned for more details.
“Building on more than a century of legacy, the company is shaping the future of neighborhood grocery through continued store investments, innovative formats and a seamless omnichannel experience that delivers exceptional value both in stores and online,” says the Winn-Dixie website. “Guided by its purpose to feed and enrich the communities it serves, The Winn-Dixie Company is known for exceptional service and locally authentic stores. The grocer is committed to offering fresh, high-quality products and meaningful value through its nationally recognized Winn-Dixie Rewards program.”
