Atlanta History Center Opens Its Civil War Exhibit

More Perfect Union: The American Civil War Era is the new exhibition at the Atlanta History Center. It explores the Civil War from a broader angle, looking beyond the battles and military leaders. The exhibit examines the causes of the war, experiences of enslaved people, and the challenges of Reconstruction after the war ended.
The exhibition presents visitors with a complete view of this period in American history. The exhibition explores topics including slavery, racial violence, freedom, democracy, and Reconstruction through historical artifacts and personal accounts.
A RoughDraft Atlanta report reads that Atlanta was one of the most significant cities affected by the Civil War. This exhibition connects national events to Atlanta’s own history. The exhibition opens as part of the museum’s 100th anniversary celebrations.
What’s Inside the Exhibit

It is one of the largest exhibitions ever created by the museum and features many newly acquired and rarely seen objects.
According to SaportaReport, the exhibition displays personal diaries, letters, maps, military items, and other objects. These objects reveal the everyday life of people during the era. The exhibition includes a rare copy of Frederick Douglass’s 1852 speech.
Among the featured artifacts is the battle flag of the 127th U.S. Colored Troops. It is the only USCT regimental flag of its kind in the Southeast. Other items include shackles from the Middle Passage, a handwritten John Brown letter, and a flag from a former slave refugee camp.
The first phase spans approximately 9,000 square feet, with a second phase expanding the exhibition to more than 15,400 square feet, according to SaportaReport. The exhibition reflects a $16 million investment and more than 30 years of collecting.
