Matt Luckie, the famous Austin bar owner behind local favorites such as Lavaca Street Bar and Star Bar, will soon be opening a new establishment, according to recent public records. The bar will be called Mean Eyed Cat II, an apparent expansion of the storied 5th St original, and will be located at 8600 FM 150 West in Kyle, next to Hays City Store.
What Now Austin reached out to Mr. Luckie to inquire about his mysterious upcoming project, specifically its potential food & beverage component and prospective opening dates, but he was not immediately available for comment.
Fortunately, public records examined by What Now Austin illuminate key details. The project description states that development will consist of “new construction of a 2700 sf bar & 1100sf outdoor patio”, costing around $800,000 and reaching completion in May 2024.
Describing themselves on the official website, the bar states “Mean Eyed Cat is unabashedly what Texas’ capital city is all about. Featuring an excellent draft selection of local and craft beers, a full bar and creative cocktail list; Mean Eyed Cat has been a staple of local life ever since 2004.”
Even in the absence of more information about this exciting new development, readers and partners can trust the bar will be run by the best possible team, considering Luckie’s stellar track record as owner of some of the city’s most significant drinking establishments. Luckie’s beverage concessionaire company, FBR Management, has also supplied alcohol for notable festivals such as Austin City Limits, Lollapalooza, and Austin Food + Wine Festival.
