A South African restaurant concept appears to be planning its first Central Texas spot in Austin’s Mueller Town Center District. Nando’s PERi-PERi is set to start construction on a nearly 2,500-square-foot space at 1825 McBee St., Ste. 110 in coming months, according to a recent project filing. Early 2024 could be the completion date, but there is no word on when the Austin spot might open to the public.

Nando’s PERi-PERi is known across the globe for its spicy flame-grilled chicken. The brand is expanding across the Lone Star State and currently has several locations in Texas including two in Greater Houston and one in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.

Nando’s PERi-PERi first opened in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1987. The brand entered the U.S. market in 2008 and currently operates in Texas, Illinois, Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., as well as about two dozen other countries.

The chicken at Nando’s PERi-PERi is marinated for 24 hours, flame-grilled, and basted with flavor and spice. The menu features chicken plates, sandwiches, wraps, bowls, salads, and more.
