Comal Market is planning to open at 309 Comal St., Unit 135, in Travis, according to public filings. What Now Austin spoke with owner Moiz Ali who shared he’s targeting an October opening.
Ali described the shop as a grocery and convenience store aimed at serving the surrounding neighborhood. “It’s going to be a grocery store, a convenience store,” he told What Now Austin, adding that the shop will carry daily essentials for the community once it opens.
The Comal Street corridor sits in East Austin, an area that has seen a mix of small grocers, food trucks and neighborhood retail develop alongside its residential growth in recent years. A compact convenience store format like Comal Market’s would fill a familiar niche in that kind of setting, giving residents a walkable option for everyday items without a trip to a larger supermarket.
Ali also pointed to a second, recently opened location under the same concept: Grove Basket, at 3607 South Lamar Blvd. “This is gonna be pretty much the same concept as the Comal Market,” he said of the South Lamar store.
Both stores are part of a small, independently owned convenience store operation serving different pockets of Austin, with Comal Market bringing the concept to the Comal Street corridor later this year while Grove Basket quietly establishes itself on South Lamar.
