Your favorite new spot for coffee is coming soon to the Charleston area. Begun with a mission to help people struggling with hunger, homelessness, and addiction, Aidan & Hilda’s Mobile Coffee Pub plans to put 100% of its proceeds toward the cause.
Elizabeth, the founding Executive Director of Aidan & Hilda’s, told What Now on Tuesday that the business originally began as an idea for a brick-and-mortar cafe but has shifted gears toward a mobile approach, bringing down overhead in order to maximize the nonprofit coffee truck’s contributions.
“With the economy teetering, we’re glad to be going mobile,” Elizabeth said. “It will leave us with more to give the people who need it.”
An ordained pastor, Elizabeth says she has felt the need to go outside the walls of the church in order to serve the most vulnerable people in Charleston.
“I’ve learned that love is all there is. Everything boils down to it. I don’t want to argue with people about what love means. It means wanting the highest good for your fellow human being.”
A large part of Aidan & Hilda’s mission is to support people struggling with addiction, as personal finances get tighter and rehab becomes more and more inaccessible.
“Only rich people can afford to go to rehab these days, which is wrong,” Elizabeth says. “We’re hoping to partner with another local nonprofit that works with addiction issues, with an emergency fund that we will contribute to to help pay for rehab—good rehab—for people who need it.”
Once it launches, Aidan & Hilda’s will serve a selection of espresso drinks and pastries—for the moment, the question is where. The plan is to open on James Island, Elizabeth says, but the specific site has not been selected yet.
