A New York-style bagel shop is preparing to debut its second location this spring.

Nosh New York Bagels, owned by husband-and-wife duo Michael and Jen Penchansky, is coming to The Village at Wexford on Hilton Head Island.

The new location will join the flagship shop at Riverwalk Commons, which serves the Bluffton and Okatie area and recently celebrated its one-year anniversary.

“We moved here from the north. My childhood vacation place was Hilton Head,” Jen told What Now Charleston. “We picked Bluffton for our first shop because there’s a chance for entrepreneurship. There’s a good opportunity with a lot of northerners. Expanding was always our plan. My love for Hilton Head—that was always the second place I wanted to open up shop.”

The name “nosh” refers to eating food enthusiastically or greedily.

“In Yiddish, Jewish language, it means to enjoy eating, to graze, the joy of food. Bagels originated as a Jewish food. My husband grew up Jewish. It’s always been an important part of his heritage. We wanted the name to be happy and bring joy, so nosh just made sense,” she said.

The new 750-square-foot space will serve as a dedicated takeout location with a mobile pickup window.

“Obviously, Hilton Head has its locals, but one huge thing is tourists. I feel like for breakfast and lunch, they want to go to the beach. We really want to push the grabbing and going. It’s the perfect concept just to grab the food and go outside,” Jen said.

She continued, “In The Village at Wexford, they have these beautiful courtyards where you can sit. While guests are not technically dining in our establishment, luckily our front door is right on top of one of those courtyards. There’s about eight tables. That will be the main difference.”

The menu will continue to feature the same bagels, sandwiches and wraps, offering the “same vibe, same food, same great bagels.”

Highlights include “The OG,” featuring scrambled eggs, American cheese and either sausage or applewood-smoked bacon; the “Uncle Leo Italian,” with ham, turkey, Genoa salami, provolone cheese, banana peppers, shredded lettuce, tomatoes, mayonnaise, oil and vinegar; and a take on Philadelphia’s classic cheesesteak, “Yo, Adrian!,” with shaved sirloin, provolone cheese, grilled peppers and onions and chipotle aioli.

The duo looks forward to sharing their fare with the community.

“We’re a heart-led business, where it’s just about bringing good food to people, starting their day happy with a good solid meal. Bringing that to the community makes me most excited,” Jen said.

She is also eager to grow the team.

“We have a real work family at our Ridgeland location; they help us, we help them. We go out of our way to help develop our staff. We want to give additional resources to our staff that might not have otherwise had access. That’s a big part of our mission,” she said.

An official opening date has not yet been announced, but the team is planning to open within the next few weeks, depending on permitting and construction.

Jen said they are already eyeing a few locations for expansion and hope to grow the shop into a “mini chain around the area.”

“There’s so many tri-state transplants down here now, and everybody always says that they miss their bagels. So, here we are!” she said.
