Whataburger is planning its first Asheville restaurant, according to a report by the Asheville Citizen Times. Filings submitted to the City of Asheville outline plans for a location at 275 Smokey Park Highway, marking the chain’s proposed debut in Asheville.
The proposed restaurant would take over the site of a former Popeyes on Smokey Park Highway, adding another national fast-food brand to Asheville’s dining scene.
The Asheville Citizen Times reports that plans have been filed for the Smokey Park Highway property, though details about construction timelines and the restaurant’s debut remain limited.
According to the company’s website, Whataburger was founded in Corpus Christi, Texas, in 1950. It traces its roots to founder Harmon Dobson, who set out to create a burger so large that customers would say, “What a burger!” after the first bite. Over the decades, the brand expanded beyond Texas and established a presence across the South, becoming known for its distinctive orange-and-white striped branding.
Today, Whataburger operates restaurants across multiple states and continues to grow its footprint outside its home state. The chain’s menu includes burgers, chicken sandwiches, breakfast items, and other fast-casual favorites served throughout the day.
If plans move forward, additional details regarding construction and a potential opening timeline are expected to emerge as the project advances through the review process.
