A destination for movies is closing in the college town, but not for long.
It is being reported that AMC Evanston 12 at 1715 S Maple Avenue has closed for renovations. The staff will be scaling back the number of screens to make way for a new mixed-use development at the space. Right now, the reopening date is looking like sometime in early 2027.
The Evanston 12 initially opened in November 2022, taking over the Century 12 theater that was struggling financially. Almost four years after debuting, the team is hoping to upgrade the space with new luxury seating and updated auditoriums, new carpeting and painting.
“This investment in AMC Evanston is a strong demonstration of AMC’s commitment to ensuring the location remains a premier entertainment destination for years to come,” said Dan Ellis, executive vice president and chief operations, development & marketing officer for AMC Theatres, in a statement sent to the media. “When this project is complete, moviegoers will enjoy a dramatically enhanced experience from the moment they walk through the front doors until the credits roll. We are excited to bring luxury recliner seating and a completely refreshed theatre environment to our guests in Evanston.”
The theater is between Church Street and Clark Street, close to the Davis Street/Evanston Metra station. Also at this building are World Market, Sky Zone Trampoline Park, Cozy Noodles & Rice and Blick Art Materials. This is across the street from Northwestern Medicine Orthopedics.
The theater will officially close tomorrow, July 19. Right now, there is no statement from AMC Evanston 12 on their website. What Now Chicago has reached out to the team at AMC and is awaiting comment.
