Meijer could add three new supercenters to the Columbus-area retail landscape in the coming years, with planned locations in Jerome Township, Violet Township and Obetz.
Meijer is continuing to expand its Central Ohio footprint, with three new stores planned across the Columbus area.
The Walker, Michigan-based retailer is planning a new store at the intersection of Pickerington Road and Refugee Road in Violet Township. The project will bring one of Meijer’s signature supercenters to the area, adding another major grocery and general merchandise option for shoppers.
In Obetz, the city has announced that Meijer will be part of the $1 billion Buckstone development, a large-scale project planned for the community. Meijer had previously said it was conducting due diligence on the site.
The retailer is also planning a new location in Jerome Township, near Dublin. The proposed store will span approximately 160,000 square feet on a 29.5-acre site west of Hyland Croy Road and north of Post Road, with the property also bordered by Route 33 to the east.
Jerome Township trustees approved the property’s rezoning in March to accommodate the development. The site had previously been rezoned in 2007 for a large-scale retail development described at the time as a “Target-style center.”
According to township officials, the Meijer project is generally consistent with the type of large-scale retail use previously planned for the property, although rezoning was necessary to reconfigure the site.
The property also has opportunities for additional outlot development, though any future projects would require township approval.
The planned Jerome Township Meijer will be located near the recently opened Coughlin Kia of Dublin.
Meijer currently operates more than 500 stores across the Midwest, including 10 locations in Central Ohio. The retailer operates several store formats, including its traditional supercenters, smaller grocery-only stores and market-format locations.
The company has continued adding stores across its footprint, including recent openings in Ohio and Michigan, with additional locations planned in Michigan and Indiana.
The three Columbus-area projects come as the region’s grocery market continues to grow, with several national and regional retailers expanding across Central Ohio.
Recent and upcoming additions include Kroger Marketplace, Aldi, Trader Joe’s, BJ’s Wholesale Club, Grocery Outlet and Sprouts Farmers Market, giving local shoppers more options while increasing competition among grocery retailers.
