Urban Outfitters is due for a relocation. The store will remain in The Woodlands Mall at 1201 Lake Woodlands Drive but will move to the former Lane Bryant location in the mall on Level 1, according to Community Impact.
The relocation is currently underway after beginning in early April and is slated to be completed and open later this summer. We don’t suspect any major changes or a grand opening. But keep your ears perked and eyes open for the latest.
Urban Outfitters was founded in 1970 as a college project by students Richard Hayne, Judy Wicks, and Scott Belair. Originally called “The Free People’s Store” near the University of Pennsylvania, it sold vintage clothing, records, and apartment goods. The company incorporated and officially rebranded as Urban Outfitters in 1976.
Over the decades, the original Philadelphia storefront grew into a massive publicly traded corporation. Urban Outfitters, Inc. (now officially known as URBN) expanded into a portfolio of distinct lifestyle brands, including Free People, Anthropologie, Terrain, and Nuuly.
The brand operates more than 250 Urban Outfitters retail locations globally, alongside a small number of franchisee-owned stores. There are about ten locations in Texas, with at least three in the Greater Houston region.
The Urban Outfitters in The Woodlands Mall originally opened on Level 1 in the outdoor shopping area known as The Courtyard. Lane Bryant began to liquidate and close locations in 2020. Now that the clothing store is gone, it appears to be a perfect move for Urban Outfitters.
Urban Outfitters sells trendy apparel, lifestyle goods, and home decor aimed primarily at young adults. Their inventory ranges from women’s and men’s clothing to quirky room decorations, beauty products, and electronics.
What Now Houston reached out to Hayne, who remains the brand’s Chief Executive Officer. Unfortunately, we did not hear back by the time of this publication.
Urban Outfitters is anticipated to open in The Woodlands Mall at 1201 Lake Woodlands Drive on Level 1 in the former Lane Bryant by this August.
