East Memphis could soon see a new dining concept from a familiar restaurant group.

A recent zoning letter filed with the Memphis and Shelby County Division of Planning and Development reveals that Spell Restaurant Group (SRG) is looking to take over the former Houston’s Restaurant space at 5000 Poplar Ave.

After more than 40 years in business, Houston’s closed its only Memphis location in late 2024, citing public safety and staffing challenges. The 7,570-square-foot building was listed for sale on February 3, 2025.

When reached for comment by What Now Memphis, Rick Spell—who owns SRG with his daughter Christy Spell Terry—declined to comment on their specific plans for the space, stating that “there will be appropriate times later.”

Founded in 2004, SRG is behind local restaurants BABALU and Brookhaven Pub & Grill, as well as several Florida eateries. Stay tuned for updates as this project unfolds in East Memphis.
