Talea Beer Co., the woman-founded brewery known for its vibrant aesthetics and approachable brews, is officially expanding its footprint to the Upper West Side. An upcoming taproom, located at 441 Amsterdam Ave., marks the sixth location for the rapidly growing brand, which has upended the “man-cave” brewery trope and galvanized a following far more inclusive.

Co-owner LeAnn Darland recently told What Now New York that the move into the Upper West Side has been a goal for the company for years.

“We have been looking for a space on the Upper West Side since we opened Williamsburg,” Darland said. “It’s a very attractive neighborhood that doesn’t have a ton of bar offerings in the same way that a lot of downtown neighborhoods have.”

She noted that the community aligns with Talea’s unique brand identity. Unlike traditional taprooms that often skew toward a male-dominated audience, Talea has built its taproom success on being a neighborhood hub with broader appeal. The upcoming taproom will have a bright and lively feel with plenty of open space. Renovations will include the addition of a first-floor bathroom that is ADA accessible.

The new location will further lean into the Talea identity by being an all-day concept. It will welcome guests for morning coffee or remote work sessions before transitioning into a more traditional taproom in the late afternoon. To complement the beverage program —which will include 16 beers on tap — the taproom will offer breakfast, lunch, and dinner fare.

“We think the demographic is perfect for us—young families, new moms, and a younger and younger clientele moving that way,” Darland noted. The numbers back this inclusive strategy: “We see about 70 percent of our customers are women, and we’re very family-friendly.”

The upcoming taproom will also mark the first time Darland and co-owner Tara Hankinson are bringing in a culinary consultant to develop the menu.

“We want very easy fare with something a little surprising with each dish,” Darland said of the food program. “It’s comforting enough that they’re crowd-pleasing dishes, but we’ll have a special twist on each.”

The new taproom is expected to open this fall, bringing a fresh, bright energy to the historic Amsterdam Avenue corridor. It comes during a period of momentum for the brewery. While their physical taprooms continue to pop up across the city, their presence on retail shelves is also bubbling up.

“In wholesale, we are up about 30 percent volume year-over-year, so that’s really taken off compared to last year, which is promising,” Darland explained.
