A historic restaurant in Michigan announced its permanent closure. Clara’s on the River will serve its last meal this weekend, marking the end of its legendary journey from train depot to restaurant. Clara’s on the River Set to Close
Owner Ross Simpson transformed the vacant 1888 Michigan Central Railroad Depot into a restaurant. Clara’s on the River, located at 44 McCamly Street in Battle Creek, is one of the longest-operating eateries in Michigan.
The restaurant serves casual American staple comfort dishes like classic French onion soup and other classic dishes. The interior of the restaurant features antiques, chandeliers, a walk through the history of Battle Creek, and original brass lanterns from the Bradley Hubbard in the foyer. Fireplaces and vintage furnishings add to the restaurant’s historic atmosphere.
The restaurant announced the closure in an Instagram post. The team wrote, “It is with both a heavy heart and mixed emotions that we announce the closure of Clara’s on the River effective September 6, 2026.”
Following the closure announcement, several loyal customers of the restaurant expressed their disappointment on social media.
Reason Behind the Closure
In the post, the team highlighted that due to “increased competition from national chains in our market, continued high food and energy costs” the restaurant is shutting down.
The team also explained, “unaffordable maintenance costs concerning our 35-year-old HVAC system” also made its operations difficult.
The restaurant will remain open until Sunday brunch this week. The team encouraged the community to visit the restaurant for the last time and enjoy one more meal.
“Come say goodbye to this beautiful building and the legacy that it holds,” the team wrote.
The restaurant’s closure will bring an end to Clara’s on the River’s longtime presence in Battle Creek, while the historic depot remains a notable part of the city’s history.
