Sushi Fukami , one of Portland’s most celebrated omakase concepts, is graduating from pop-up to permanent with a new downtown location at 1128 SW Alder Street. It will be in an intimate space of about 700 square feet near the entrance of Multnomah Whiskey Library, according to The Oregonian. The intimate storefront, previously home to Lil’ Shalom, will become the latest chapter in chef Cody Auger‘s culinary career.

The project is a natural next step for Auger, who has spent the better part of a decade building one of the most quietly revered sushi legacies in the Pacific Northwest. He first made his name at Hokusei on SE Belmont, then evolved the concept into Fukami Sushiya, an eight-seat chef’s counter focused on omakase dining that brought devoted regulars and some of the best reviews of any sushi spot in the city. He later co-founded Nimblefish, a full-service sushi restaurant on Southeast 20th Avenue, widely regarded as among the finest in Portland.

The location also gives the project a solid start, with the project sitting near Multnomah Whiskey Library and close to several restaurants, bars, hotels, and office buildings. The Alder Street space could position Fukami as a great destination in the heart of Portland.

While a firm opening date has not yet been announced, Sushi Fukami is shaping up to be one of the more closely watched restaurant openings in downtown Portland, especially for diners who have followed Auger’s work through Fukami, Hokusei, and Nimblefish.
