It looks like a lively Mexican cantina based out of San Jose may finally be making its way to Midtown Sacramento.

El Cabron Kitchen & Cantina appears to be opening a second location at 1517 21st St, in the former Holy Diver space. Commercial permits filed with the city just last month outline plans for a sit-down restaurant and full bar.

The Sacramento Bee previously reported that the eatery would open in the fall of 2022, but progress was stalled for reasons that were never made public. For a while, it seemed the project might not move forward at all.

However, permits currently under review describe an “interior remodel of an existing bar into El Cabron Kitchen & Cantina,” with proposed work including new interior walls, updated finishes, ADA-compliant restrooms, a stair lift, new lighting, and partial plumbing. The total estimated construction cost is $125,000

According to its website, the original El Cabron in San Jose is a “vibrant celebration of Mexico’s rich culinary traditions,” featuring small plates like El Cabron Nachos and Tacos de la Calle, along with heartier options such as Carne Asada and Pollo en Mole. The menu also includes soups, salads, and a bounty of craft cocktails.

Managing partner Joseph Anthony Castillo could not immediately be reached for comment. Keep an eye out for updates as plans for El Cabron Kitchen & Cantina continue to unfold in Midtown.
