Black Mizu Cafe, a new Japanese-inspired cafe concept, is set to open in San Diego’s Little Italy neighborhood at 1953 India Street.

The cafe will occupy approximately 1,000 square feet inside Cloak & Petal, according to San Diego Magazine. The expansion follows Cloak & Petal receiving Michelin recognition in December. While an exact opening date has yet to be announced, the cafe is expected to open in August 2026. Customers can expect specialty coffee, pastries, Japanese-inspired comfort foods, and a selection of signature beverages.

Black Mizu Cafe is not intended to be a pop-up concept. Instead, the cafe will make use of the restaurant’s space during hours when the main dining room is less active. The area will seat approximately 25 to 30 customers and can also serve as a private dining space during non-café hours. Managing partner Cesar Vallin expects the cafe to operate daily beginning around 6:30 to 7:00 a.m.

The concept is also expected to offer extended evening hours on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, remaining open until approximately 9:00 p.m. The interior will feature a Japanese- and Scandinavian-inspired minimalist design. Looking ahead, the company plans to introduce a Pacific Rim-inspired brunch menu in spring 2027. Executive chef Robert Cassidy will lead the development of the expanded brunch offerings.

The food and beverage program will include coffee made with beans sourced from Torque Coffee and Compa Coffee, along with pastries from Asa Bakery. Customers can also expect menu items such as tamago sandwiches, bánh mì paninis, edamame hummus toast, and a variety of parfaits. The cafe’s beverage lineup will feature specialty drinks including a honey yuzu sparkling matcha, cherry blossom latte, white miso caramel latte, and cardamom cinnamon latte.

This will be an excellent landing spot for Black Mizu Cafe, given its location in Little Italy and its connection to the established Cloak & Petal brand. The concept allows the company to serve customers during morning and afternoon hours while expanding its overall footprint at the property. With coffee service, light fare, and future brunch offerings, Black Mizu Cafe will introduce a new daytime option to the neighborhood.
