Lost Cause Meadery and Oddish Wine owners Billy and Suzanna Beltz are planning a new restaurant and coffee project in La Mesa at 8495 La Mesa Blvd.
The roughly 5,000-square-foot project is planned for a building between the Village and MacArthur Park, according to San Diego Magazine. The building dates back to the 1940s and has previously housed a neighborhood market, butcher shop, secondhand children’s store, electronics store, dry cleaner, and bike shop. The project is projected to open by the end of 2027 and is being developed with Bica in Normal Heights as a partner for the restaurant and coffee program.
The planned concept will offer coffee and light breakfast, followed by lunch and dinner service. The space is also expected to include a full bar serving Oddish Wine and Lost Cause Meadery products, along with local wines, beers, ciders, and other beverages. Aperitivo offerings, low ABV cocktails, and spritzes are also planned.
Food will be prepared using a wood-fired oven and rotisserie, and the project will also include a small retail section for natural wines and ciders. Plans eventually call for outdoor dining and drinking space, as well as a kid-friendly area. The project will also include a coffee program developed with Bica.
Tecscape Design, designer Carly Miller Chen, and contractor CLTVT make up the design-and-build team named in the article. The project comes as La Mesa has added several food and beverage businesses in recent years, including Dark Horse Coffee and Small Batch, which opened in 2018. San Diego Magazine also noted Stella Jean’s and Pop Pie as upcoming businesses and reported that Native Poppy was planning a new headquarters and studio in the city.
