Mon Chourie, a Korean-style cream puff business owned and operated by baker Kelly Kim, is planning to open a bakery counter-service window inside Kairoa Brewing Company in San Diego’s University Heights at 4601 Park Boulevard, Suite A.
The bakery counter is expected to open by the end of 2026, according to San Diego Magazine, although the opening remains contingent on permits and inspections. In the meantime, Mon Chourie will continue appearing at Michi Michi Bakery on Wednesdays, along with other pop-ups and events around San Diego. Kim tells San Diego Magazine that Mon Chourie will eventually open its own storefront and introduce more events in North County to satisfy demand.
Kim will also celebrate the business’s second anniversary with a party at Easy Does It on August 25 from 4 to 7 p.m. Kim has been selling Mon Chourie products at farmers’ markets, various San Diego businesses, and pop-ups, including Pizza Kaiju, Pho Ga Go, and Mixed Grounds. The business has since developed a regular Wednesday presence at Michi Michi Bakery. San Diego Magazine readers also voted Mon Chourie Best Pop-Up for 2026.
The name Mon Chourie combines wordplay around the French pastry term choux, the Korean word syu, and Stevie Wonder’s song “My Cherie Amour.” The business specializes in choux au craquelin, a cream puff topped with a thin layer of cookie-like dough that becomes crunchy during baking. Kim’s pastries are filled with a light diplomat cream based on her mother’s recipe.
Mon Chourie offers both sweet and savory options, including mini-choux, savory potato croquette cream puffs, and Dubai chocolate choux au craquelin. Kim also plans to add salt bread, a butter-rich pastry topped with sea salt that originated in Japan and later became popular in South Korea. The new bakery counter will give customers another way to find the business outside of its rotating pop-up schedule.
Kairoa Brewing Company, located along Park Boulevard in University Heights, will host Mon Chourie’s first permanent bakery counter. Until the new space opens, the business will continue its Wednesday service at Michi Michi Bakery and other pop-ups. Mon Chourie posts its upcoming event and pop-up schedule on Instagram each Monday.
