Tacos El Franc, one of Tijuana’s most beloved and acclaimed taquerias, is opening its first-ever U.S. location at Westfield Plaza Bonita in May 2025, marking a monumental milestone for the Baja-born brand as it brings its signature flavor and tradition north of the border.
Originally founded as a street cart by Javier Valadez in 1974, Tacos El Franc opened its brick-and-mortar location in Tijuana in 1996. Since then, Tacos El Franc has become a cultural landmark. Known for its adobada, sizzling carne asada, real avocado, and fiercely loyal following, the taqueria now draws thousands of guests weekly to its flagship location in Tijuana and is poised to do the same in National City.
“There’s a part of Mexico that hasn’t yet been shared with the U.S.,” says Roberto Kelly, co-owner of Tacos El Franc USA in a statement. “The flavor and quality of authentic Tijuana tacos haven’t truly been experienced here. We’re here to change that, and it’s a huge responsibility to do it right.”
Roberto, who first dined at Tacos El Franc as a teenager, spent over two decades earning the trust of Valadez and his family. Now, with their full support and partnership — and in partnership with restaurateur Salvador Lombroso — the team is launching what is expected to be the first of several U.S. locations.
Every element of the new restaurant is designed to emulate the Tijuana original — from the exact same recipes and top-tier ingredients to the master taquero behind the charcoal grill. Guests will enjoy a full-service taqueria experience with counter seating, traditional tables, high-tops, and a cheve-bar pouring Mexican beer, micheladas and clamatos.
“When we start seeing familiar faces return week after week, like we do in Tijuana, that’s when we’ll know we’ve made it,” says Roberto. “Our pride and joy is in the quality and taste of our tacos, and we can’t wait to share that with San Diego.”
Tacos El Franc is located at Westfield Plaza Bonita, 3030 Plaza Bonita Road, Space 1108, National City, CA 91950.
