Johnny and Jimmy Tung, the Orlando-based restaurateurs behind restaurants like Kōsen and Tanto, are having a big year in the Tampa Bay area. Just over two weeks ago, What Now reported on the planned opening of Tokyo Swim Club, a new rooftop bar in which the Tung brothers are partners, which will be headed up Mike Western and Andrew Huang.
But, as it turns out, that’s not all that’s in the pipeline from Johnny and Jimmy Tung. The restaurateurs are currently at work on Mei, a brand-new restaurant that will open at 320 Third St S in St. Pete.
“Mei is a contemporary dining destination in downtown St. Petersburg blending French technique, Nordic philosophy, and Japanese ingredients,” says a description provided to Google Maps by the restaurant. “Led by Executive Chef Alex Chamberlain and Sommelier Benjamin Coutts, Mei offers two distinct experiences: The Living Room, a communal à la carte and prix fixe setting, and The Kitchen Counter, an intimate chef-guided tasting.”
Details on the menu at Mei have yet to be revealed, but the description provides a vivid image of the techniques brought to bear:
“Rooted in seasonality, sustainability, and thoughtful hospitality, the menu highlights fermentation, binchotan grilling, and locally sourced ingredients. Designed as a serene, home-like space, Mei invites guests to gather, connect, and experience food as poetry.”
