New England-based Italian restaurant Pasta Beach is moving forward on plans nearly three years in the making for a building at 492 King St in Charleston’s East Side.

Lennon Construction Co., the contractors for the family-owned restaurant submitted permit applications this week to fulfill plans originally submitted to the Board of Architectural Review in April of 2021. City records indicate that the group plans to renovate two floors of interior space as well as modify an exterior courtyard to provide outdoor dining service.

The building changed hands in 2021 for $6.8M to an investment group associated with the restaurant, according to Post and Courier. The site previously held upscale restaurant 492 which shuttered in 2018 after four years of service.

Pasta Beach currently has three locations in Providence and Newport, RI as well as Boston, MA. Founded by Gianni and Susan Ropolo, the restaurant combines traditional Italian flavors true to Gianni’s roots in Torino, Italy with an open-air atmosphere influenced by the coastal locations they choose.

Their menu varies by location and serves a combination of pizzas, pastas, salads and antipasti featuring local seafood and ingredients. The restaurant group is a true family affair, with sons J. Eldredge and Tyler running operations and restaurant design, respectively.

A representative told What Now Charleston that the restaurant does not yet have an opening date, but they hope to set one within the next two months.
