Roosevelt Tamale Parlor has shut down after nearly a century in business. The owners attribute the closure to “skyrocketing” costs and pandemic-related woes.
The “old-school Mission District” Mexican spot’s closure comes almost a year after co-owners Aaron Presbrey and Barry Moore celebrated its 100th anniversary. The end marks a drastic change to 24th Street, considering that Roosevelt’s has sat alongside other longtime establishments like Pop’s Bar, St. Francis Fountain, and the Brava Theater for nearly a century.
The cuisine has changed quite a bit over the restaurant’s long run, but Presbrey and Moore described the menu as a “combination of Mexican and American homestyle dishes,” “whether it’s a steaming bowl of pozole or a rack of ribs that falls from the bone or handmade tamales.” In addition to the plates mentioned, the menu offered traditional and Americanized variations of quesadillas, enchiladas, and tamales.
Pablo Wong, a commercial real estate consultant for MEDA, told Mission Local that the 2817 24th Street spot will soon be home to a new Mexican restaurant, La Carreta Rotisserie. The business has signed a 10-year lease and the city permit shows the application was filed by Eden Rodriguez.
What Now San Francisco briefly reached out to Eden Rodriguez but, due to being early in the process, he was unable to provide further information.
