The two incoming Brooklyn Dumpling Shops will be located at 308 South St. and 3400 Lancaster Ave. in University City. The South St. location is planned to debut near the end of 2022, while the Lancaster Ave. store is predicted to debut in early 2023, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. The South St. store has plans to operate 24 hours a day on the weekends while the Lancaster location will lock up at 2 a.m.

“Brooklyn Dumpling Shop has turned classic diner staples into dumplings,” explains the company website, “and they offer never-ending options to choose from.” With dumpling selections like Pastrami, The Reuben, Philly Cheesesteak, Bacon Cheeseburger, Lamb Gyro w Tzatziki, and Peanut Butter & Jelly, there’s no shortage of deliciousness when it comes to the automat operation.

Interestingly, the first US automat — a vending machine-like service mechanism — debuted in Philly in 1902. The BDS website thoroughly chronicles the history of automats, explaining how in the early days of the invention “[diners] would insert the required number of coins in [the] machine and then lift a window, hinged at the top, and remove the meal, usually wrapped in waxed paper. The machines were replenished from the kitchen behind.”

“At Brooklyn Dumpling Shop, customers can [input] their orders on a phone or kiosk and will receive a QR code once the order is placed,” explains What Now Philly’s January BDS coverage. “You can watch your order prepared in the glass-encased open kitchen and pick up your order in a heated or chilled locker by scanning your QR code.”

Franchisee Nick Sordoni will head up the two incoming locations. For more information about BDS’ Philadelphia expansion, catch the rest of our What Now Philly story here
