As of June 17, Armadillo Willy’s three outlets in Blossom Hill, Sunnyvale, and Santa Clara were closed. The popular restaurant group confirmed the news in a post on Instagram. “After 40+ unforgettable years of serving up BBQ and serving its community, it’s time to say goodbye,” the chain shared on Wednesday.

The franchise went on to thank every person on the staff employed at Armadillo Willy’s “who brought passion, hustle, and heart to our kitchen and tables” every day. It also extended gratitude to the South Bay community that cherished the BBQ and supported Armadillo Willy’s over the last four decades and beyond.

Key Financial Constraints

On its website, CEO Kevin Roberts shared a heartfelt message addressed to its loyal and valued customers. The statement said post‑pandemic shifts in consumer behavior and inflation severely disrupted the business patterns to the extent that it never regained traction equivalent to pre-pandemic sales levels.

The past five years saw reduced sales and the accompanying inflation that became harder for the chain to overcome. Hence, the group was compelled to close its outlets in the Bay Area and continue operating as a standalone from San Mateo.

The CEO revealed that the decision was a painful one and that he did everything to avoid the outcome.

Future Plans

Debuted in 1983, Armadillo Willy’s prides itself on being a locally owned, Texas-inspired, wood-fired BBQ. While three of its popular locations remain closed, the chain has no plans to cease the business.

Operating out of its still-running San Mateo location, Armadillo Willy’s aims to serve its guests with great BBQ and hospitality. Catering services will continue from San Mateo.

Known for its BBQ by the pound and portion catering menu, Armadillo Willy’s popular offerings included its 18-hour smoked brisket, BBQ sandwiches, ribs, chicken, and sausage.

The popular BBQ chain served classic Texas-style fare in-house for over four decades and became a beloved staple. Its longevity is remarkable despite persistent challenges.
