Historical Context
The tradition of Times Square’s New Year’s Eve Ball dates back to 1907 when fireworks were banned in the area. An illuminated ball was lowered from the Times Tower’s flagpole at midnight for the first time and since then created a tradition synonymous with New Year’s eve.
The ball evolved in design and materials while staying a constant symbol of the New Year through the last many decades. Live performances add to the vibrancy of the NYC event.
Each New Year’s Eve, Times Square attracts crowds from across the globe. Music, the famous ball drop, and confetti keep the event alive even after decades. Those looking to welcome 2026 amid lights and music can head to the venue on December 31.
