After more than 70 years in operation, the Cadet Restaurant in Kittanning is shutting down. Known for its burgers and retro atmosphere, the restaurant will serve its final meal on December 31.

Iconic Cadet Restaurant to Close

Cadet Restaurant, a longtime local favorite, shared the closure announcement on social media. The eatery is popular for its classic historical atmosphere, Poorboy burgers, and a 30-foot-tall cowboy statue.

Signature items on the menu included Blueberry lemon pancakes with sausages, steak and fries, and meaty burgers.

In the Facebook post, the team wrote, “We will be closing our doors on Wednesday, December 31, at 3 pm.” The restaurant shared a note of appreciation and gratitude for the community and said, “To all of our customers—and the customers who became family—we love you more than words can say. This place means everything to us. It’s not just a business, it’s been our heart, our home, and our life! ”

The sudden news of the closure broke the hearts of its loyal customers and fans. One of the fans shared a heartfelt message, “It’s so sad that the Cadet will be gone. It’s a piece of Armstrong Co history and holds a special place in many of our hearts. Generations grew up here and worked here—lots of memories made within those walls. I’m so very sorry to see another piece of our County and history wiped away. Thank you for trying to continue the legacy.”

Legacy of Cadet Restaurant

Founded in 1952 by George Morda, the Cadet Restaurant was originally named The Owl’s Nest. With a 30-foot-tall giant cowboy statue named Sam, the place became quite popular among the locals and visitors alike.

Over the years, car cruising became an important tradition at the Cadet Restaurant. Customers and their cars were a big part of its identity. With support from the KITT-HAN-NE Region of the AACA of America Car Club, the restaurant continued to host regular cruises.

“When we revived this place in 2021, the very last thing we ever imagined was having to say goodbye like this. Our family is deeply saddened, and this has been incredibly hard for us to process. Right now, we simply cannot answer questions, and we kindly ask that you please be respectful,” added the team.

The Cadet Restaurant’s closure after 73 years marks the end of an era. The restaurant’s community and loyal customers will always cherish its memories.
