Savory tacos are coming to the west side of Edgewater and marking the company’s first expansion.
Block Club Chicago reported Edgewater Tacos will be opening their second location called De Colores Mexican Grill at 5403 N Clark Street this year. This follows their debut as a small taco shop in 2018 and growth ever since. Owner Patricia Guerrero told What Now Chicago she is hoping to open by Cinco de Mayo.
Guerrero is a local of Edgewater, opening the original taco shop at 75624 N Broadway just a block from her home. After eight years of running the shop and receiving customers from all over the state, she decided it was time to expand. It will be a process to open the restaurant as the business has permits, but the space is being gutted for a complete redesign.
“I want to make it my own,” Guerrero said.
Before starting her own restaurant, Guerrero’s father Isidro opened Durango Mexican Restaurant, 1130 W Thorndale in the 1980s. Patricia and her brother have carried on the family legacy, growing up with food and learning the ins and outs of cooking.
The new menu will feature many of the same favorites, like the burrito suizo, chimichanga, fajitas and of course tacos. The dishes have flavors from both Ecuador and Mexico, as Guerrero is half-Ecuadorian and Mexican. She wants to feature a soup with black beans as a new main dish.
One of the main reasons the business was successful was due to the fish taco being featured on the menu. Guerrero said customers came from all over, including Indiana and Wisconsin, to try out the tacos featuring light beer-battered wild caught cod, lettuce, tomato and chipotle mayo.
“It put us on the map,” Guerrero said.
The new location is sharing building space with A Taste of Heaven cafe at the corner of N Clark Street and W Balmoral Avenue. Sweet Green is right across the street, and this is a prime location for retail and restaurants. More information on the opening can be found on their Instagram @edgewatertacosisidro.
