An East African restaurant will be joined by a cafe addition sometime this year.
From their social media, Axum Cafe is opening in Edgewater next to Axum Ethiopian Restaurant at 5842 N Broadway. This was home to Mango Pickle for nine years. Owner Solomon Birhanu told What Now Chicago he does not have an exact date he will open the doors.
Birhanu works with the owner of Axum Ethiopian Restaurant next door and is delivering a space that serves authentic Ethiopian coffee. He and the team just recently signed the lease, and he is working with an interior designer on the space. According to Birhanu, it will have “a nice aroma” inside.
“From traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony to espresso, fresh juices, and light bites — Axum Café is a place to slow down, connect, and enjoy,” said a recent post on social media.
The menu hasn’t been revealed at this time, but coffee, tea, just and pastries will all be served. Ethiopian coffee is a very popular kind of brew known for bright flavors with high acidity. The coffee will all be prepared at the shop.
The cafe is opening next to Mas Alla del Sol Mexican restaurant. Alice & Friends Vegan Kitchen is a few storefronts down, and it is also across the street from Edgewater Farmers Market.
