Evil Genius Beer Co has acquired the brand assets of 21st Amendment Brewery in a seven-figure deal, less than a year after the Bay Area brewery’s recent shutdown at its 563 2nd St, San Francisco location, according to the San Francisco Business Times.
This has marked the company’s strategic move to expand its portfolio through an established name. The deal includes 21st Amendment’s intellectual property, recipes, and distribution rights, but notably excludes its physical locations.
It has also been reported by the publication mentioned above that the brewery’s San Leandro production facility has already been sold, while Evil Genius Beer Co is actively exploring the potential purchase of the San Francisco taproom.
While speaking to WhatNow San Francisco, the owner of Evil Genius Beer, Luke Bowen, said they have been in touch with the landlord, exploring a “potential purchase,” and assured the publication that there is “progress.”
Bowen also touched on the strategic move to acquire the brand assets of 21st Amendment Brewery, saying it was to find a brand people “love” and “resonate” with.
“We enjoy drinking, and we know people enjoy drinking. This is a brand we really admire, we love so much, and wanted it to be part of our brand and family,” Bowen tells WhatNow San Francisco. “We are really excited to be part of the story.”
He added that the deal came together thanks to a friend who had introduced them. The businessman also shared that the integration of the 21st Amendment brand will maintain its original identity, with no changes to packaging, logos, or recipes.
The moves also signal the company’s border strategy of growing through established brands, as it continues to evaluate additional opportunities.
