A favorite dining concept will be making a comeback. While Mesón’s official opening date has not yet been announced, owner Cameron McVeig confirmed that the upcoming restaurant will be heavily inspired by César, the acclaimed Spanish tapas bar known for its paella and longtime presence in Berkeley before closing in 2022, according to Nosh.

The new concept will also reunite several former César team members. The kitchen will be led by former César sous chef Juan Gomez, while Maggie Pond, who previously served as César’s opening and head chef, will also join the restaurant’s culinary team.

With an atmosphere expected to echo the spirit of César, Mesón aims to revive a style of Spanish dining that the Berkeley community has missed since the original restaurant’s closure over four years ago.

The restaurant will feature multiple seating areas, including a front dining room, an outdoor patio, a bar space, and a backyard area for games. The menu is expected to include Spanish-inspired dishes such as patatas bravas, montaditos, bocadillos, salads, Brussels sprouts with parsley-garlic sauce, and paellas.
