A Mongolian barbecue chain is making its return to San Antonio after closing its last local location earlier this year.

According to CultureMap San Antonio, Genghis Grill is preparing to open a new location at 226 W. Bitters Rd. in the Embassy Oaks Shopping Center. The new restaurant comes roughly six months after the chain closed its former San Antonio location at 1903 N. Loop 1604 in December 2025.

The new utpost is being led by local franchisee Jeff Macaitis, whose family began teasing the concept’s return on social media earlier this year. While an official opening date has not yet been announced, the new location signals the brand’s re-entry into the San Antonio market.

It was founded in 1998 by Jeff Sinell, Genghis Grill built its reputation around a customizable bowl concept that allows guests to select proteins, vegetables, noodles, and sauces before having their meals cooked on a large circular grill. The concept gained popularity by offering a more affordable alternative to traditional all-you-can-eat Mongolian barbecue restaurants.

At its peak, the chain operated nearly 100 locations nationwide. Today, Genghis Grill maintains a smaller footprint, with approximately 13 locations listed on the company’s website, most of them located in Texas.

The brand has undergone significant changes since being acquired by Craveworthy Brands in 2023. Under the leadership of former Jimmy John’s CEO Gregg Majewski, the company has focused on streamlining operations, reducing restaurant sizes, and expanding its menu offerings.

While the the build-your-own bowl experience remains a staple of the concept, guests can now also choose from a variety of chef-created menu items, including specialty rice bowls, quesadillas, and other fusion-inspired dishes.

What Now San Antonio reached out for additional information regarding the opening timeline and plans for the new location. Updates will be provided as more details become available.
