A Filipino-inspired sandwich pop-up is putting down permanent roots in Boston.
Johnny Boy, the sandwich concept founded by local chef and first-generation Filipino immigrant Jeff Almendras, is headed to 300 Summer Street in Fort Point, according to Boston Restaurant Talk. The brand’s Instagram page and website confirm the news, with the latter teasing that the eatery is “coming soon” and the former proclaiming, “Fort Point, let’s get it. 👋”
Almendras launched Johnny Boy a few years ago with the goal of bringing together his entrepreneurial spirit and love of casual food through a unique Filipino breakfast sandwich concept. The chef previously told Eater Boston that he hopes to eventually grow Johnny Boy into a collection of more than a dozen neighborhood hangouts.
For now, the menu is compact but packed with Filipino-inspired flavors. Johnny Boy’s offerings have included breakfast and Beyond Meat sandwiches, chicken bites, and tamarind tots, along with its ever-popular Fried Chicken Adobo, which features chicken thighs, Filipino adobo sauce, and pickled papaya, served on a fluffy pandesal bun.
Another standout is the longganisa sandwich, made with sweet and garlicky longganisa sausage, banana ketchup, and a fried egg, also on a pandesal bun. The menu could expand once the Fort Point eatery opens its doors.
Before making the leap to a permanent home, Johnny Boy built a following through pop-ups at spots around Greater Boston, including Food Revolution in Stoneham, Somerville’s Bow Market, and the now-closed Juliet Social Club in Somerville.
What Now Boston has reached out to Almendras for more information about the upcoming restaurant, including its menu and projected opening timeline, and will share updates as they become available.
