A renowned New York City bagel shop is expanding its footprint.
Ess-a-Bagel will open its latest shop at 10 Murray St., according to an Instagram post shared by New Openings NYC.
The bagel shop will join its existing locations at 115 Broadway, 47th St. and Third Ave., W. 32nd St., inside Wonder on the Upper West Side, Brooklyn’s Time Out Market and Newark Airport.
Ess-a-Bagel was founded in 1976 by Gene and Florence Wilpon and Florence’s brother, Aaron Wenzelberg. Today, the shop is operated by Florence’s niece, Melanie Frost.
The shop is known for its kettle-boiled bagels, baked fresh in-store daily and served with a wide selection of cream cheeses, tofu spreads, butters and jellies. The shop is also certified kosher by Tablet K.
Within its first two years of business, the shop was voted No. 1 in the tri-state area and has maintained its reputation ever since, earning recognition as one of New York City’s best bagel shops for nearly five decades.
Ess-a-Bagel has even earned praise from Lindsay Lohan, who appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. During the appearance, Lohan and Fallon discussed their go-to order: an everything bagel.
Beyond its acclaimed bagels, the shop also serves prepared salads, deli meats and cheeses, individual fish platters, knishes, sandwiches and sides.
Standout sandwiches include “Melanie’s Fav,” made with whitefish salad, sliced Nova, lettuce, tomato and onion; “Eggsplaining,” featuring scrambled eggs, sliced turkey breast, American cheese and ketchup; and “Tuna Turner,” made with tuna salad, sliced cucumber, red onion, tomato and lettuce.
An assortment of baked goods and pastries ranges from cakes and pies to croissants, danishes, challah and babka round out the offerings.
An official opening date has not yet been announced, but the recent post featuring Ess-a-Bagel signage reads, “Coming soon.”
