A new LGBTQIA+ woman-owned business is coming to the Jamaica Plain area.

Local entrepreneur Shannon Spellman recently launched a Kickstarter campaign for The Book Pub, a hybrid bookstore, café, and craft beer bar. Within its first 24 hours, the campaign had already raised more than $2,000 of its $15,500 goal.

A Massachusetts native, Spellman told What Now Boston that she envisions The Book Pub as a “cozy, eclectic” third place—“think dark academia, or Irish pubs – but slightly brighter!”—where book lovers can gather to read quietly, connect with others, and explore new ideas.

The space will feature seating areas, bookshelves, accessory displays, and a café and pub area serving artisanal coffee, light bites, and a rotating selection of local craft beers. The goal, said Spellman, is for the pub and store to “flow together seamlessly.”

Beyond the literature and libations, guests can look forward to author events, themed nights, children’s book readings, and writing workshops.

“I’m extremely excited to be following my dream of being an entrepreneur and owning my own bookstore,” wrote Spellman in the campaign. “With cozy chairs, simple snacks, coffee, and a few beers on tap, The Book Pub has everything you need to make yourself at home.”

While a specific site has not yet been secured, Spellman is searching for spots in and around Jamaica Plain, including Mission Hill. She hopes to open The Book Pub by late fall 2025, pending funding. Those interested can contribute to the campaign until April 14.
