A local coffee shop is expanding to Boston’s North Station area.

KoKo Coffee will open its latest location at 226 Causeway St, taking over the space formerly occupied by Equal Exchange Café. Once it debuts in April 2025, the café will join one KoKo location by the Boston waterfront and another in South Boston.

Though KoKo officially opened its doors in 2022, the story behind the brand stretches back much further, founder Daud Kyarizov told What Now Boston.

Raised in Turkmenistan, Kyarizov understands firsthand the challenges of living through great political and social upheaval. His dedication to human rights led him to serve as a Human Rights Defender for Turkmenistan citizens, a role that shaped his resilience and the values that would later guide his entrepreneurial journey.

Amidst the hardships he faced, Kyarizov discovered his true passion for coffee, and the caffeinated beverage eventually became the foundation for his business. What began as a modest, mobile coffee operation during the pandemic quickly evolved into a thriving venture, fueled by his desire to bring people together over quality coffee.

The new North Station location will be the biggest yet, offering 18 indoor and outdoor seats. It will showcase KoKo’s signature offerings, including freshly brewed coffee with house-made syrups like honey cinnamon or vanilla, alongside French-inspired pastries, sandwiches, bagels, and bowls. Kyarizov also promises some new and exciting additions as the café settles into the space.
