The team behind Honeycomb Creamery is cooking up something new in Cambridge.
Crisscross Bakehouse is preparing to debut at 1700A Massachusetts Avenue, right next door to the beloved small-batch ice cream shop. Formerly home to Riverside Tattoo Company, the new venture will give Honeycomb founder Kristen Rummel a chance to revisit her early career in pastry and bread-making.
Before launching Honeycomb Creamery in 2015, Rummel gained experience at a number of local Boston bakeries including Clear Flour and Union Square Donuts. Although she went on to open her own ice cream shop, she never strayed far from her baking roots, regularly finding ways to bring baked goods to Honeycomb’s menu. Most recently, the shop partnered with Levain Bakery, pairing its small-batch ice cream with Levain’s signature six-ounce cookies for the summer season.
Like Honeycomb, Crisscross will take inspiration from seasonal flavors, but the bakery’s menu will also leave room for spontaneity and creative experimentation. A representative for Honeycomb described the concept as “craving-driven,” with a focus on baking “what sounds delicious in the moment.”
While the menu is still being finalized, initial offerings are expected to include cookies, scones, biscuits, cinnamon rolls, tarts, loaves of bread, dinner rolls, focaccia, and cake slices from the team’s resident cake expert, Lexi. The bakery plans to keep some staple baked goods on hand while rotating other flavors throughout the year.
Construction is underway at the Massachusetts Avenue space, and Crisscross Bakehouse is aiming to open sometime within the next few months. Until then, Cambridge locals can get an early taste of what’s to come at Honeycomb Creamery, where Crisscross will host baked goods pop-ups Thursday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to noon, starting October 29, 2026.
