home.stead Bakery and Cafe to Close in Dorchester

home.stead Bakery and Cafe at 1448 Dorchester Avenue announced its permanent closure. In a social media announcement, the cafe said it will close after spending nearly a decade serving as a gathering space for the Dorchester community.

The team encouraged guests to stop by before the final day of service for one last cup of coffee and pastry. The team thanked customers for their support and the relationships built over the years. The community members expressed their sadness following the closure announcement.

According to a report by Dotnews, home.stead closed temporarily during the COVID-19 pandemic but reopened in October 2021. It remains unclear what business, if any, will take over the space in the historic Lenane Building.

When home.stead Bakery and Cafe opened in Fields Corner in 2016, it was the result of a community-backed effort led by Elisa Girard, Vivian Girard, and Jack Wu. The trio transformed a long-vacant storefront in the historic Lenane Building into a neighborhood cafe designed to bring people together.

Local artists displayed their work on its walls, musicians and poets found an audience there, and neighborhood groups gathered for meetings, fundraisers, and community events. The cafe developed a loyal customer base in the neighborhood over the years.

Customers visited the cafe for their home-baked goods, specialty coffee, and fresh breakfast and lunch items. The menu of pastries, muffins, cookies, breads, sandwiches, soups, salads, and panini includes several scratch-made recipes.

home.stead’s focus is on building a community atmosphere, and its food menu is complemented by a selection of Counter Culture Coffee beverages and specialty teas.

This mix of good food and community engagement made it one of Dorchester’s most cherished gathering places.
