Penny Black, a cocktail bar associated with Chemist Spirits, is preparing to open at 2 Brook St. in Asheville’s Biltmore Village. Co-owner James Donaldson confirmed the location to WhatNow Charlotte, while the Asheville Citizen-Times identified the address and upcoming opening in its coverage of local business developments.
Penny Black will take inspiration from the Prohibition-era speakeasy style of Antidote Bar, Chemist Spirits’ existing cocktail lounge in Asheville’s South Slope district. The concept is named for the Penny Black, the first adhesive postage stamp, introduced in 1840. These details were reported by Marilyn Wright Asheville Realtor in an article on Biltmore Village businesses opening and returning this fall.
The new bar will occupy the historic post office building at 2 Brook Street, connecting the concept to the history of the Biltmore Village property. An exact opening date for Penny Black has not yet been confirmed.
Chemist Spirits brings a background in craft distilling to the project. According to the company’s official website, the Asheville distillery was founded by Debbie Word and her daughter Danielle, a chemist, combining family distilling traditions with scientific knowledge. The business began with American Gin made using American botanicals and has since developed a wider range of spirits. Its product range also includes vodka, single-malt whiskey, barrel-rested gin and specialty liqueurs.
Penny Black’s specific menu and operating hours have not yet been confirmed.
