Post Oak Barbecue is firing up plans for a second Denver location, bringing its Texas-style barbecue to a new neighborhood near the University of Denver.
The restaurant is expected to open in October at 1737 E. Evans Avenue, taking over the former Sawa Mediterranean Restaurant and Buffet space, one block from the university campus.
The approximately 3,051-square-foot restaurant will feature seating for 100 guests, a patio and a larger kitchen according to The Denver Business Journal.
Owner Nick Prince also plans to introduce a new burger made with prime brisket grind, an ingredient currently used for the house-made sausage at the original Tennyson Street location.
The new restaurant will mark the second location for Post Oak Barbecue, which opened its original restaurant at 4000 Tennyson St. in 2019. Prince, who grew up in Texas, was inspired to pursue barbecue after a trip to visit his parents in Fort Worth rekindled childhood memories of traditional Texas barbecue.
Post Oak specializes in Texas-style barbecue cooked in 100% wood-fired pits using post oak brought directly from Austin, Texas. Its menu features USDA Prime Angus brisket, smoked pork shoulder, pork belly, turkey breast, house-made sausage, ribs, smoked wings, barbecue sandwiches, tacos and loaded baked potatoes.
Before opening the restaurant, Prince taught himself the craft of barbecue and went on to win the People’s Choice competition at the Arvada on Tap Barbecue Festival in 2018, where his brisket earned more than twice as many votes as the second-place entry.
