Marrow Detroit announced the closure of its original West Village location. The butcher shop and restaurant will serve its final meal on June 7. The Birmingham location will remain open through Memorial Day weekend.

West Village Favorite Marrow Preparing to Shut Down

Marrow Birmingham, located at 8044 Kercheval Avenue, will be closing its doors soon. The West Village location operates as a high-end butcher shop and restaurant with a bistro-style menu. The menu offers signature dishes like the bone marrow appetizer and Michigan beef tartare. The shop is known for house-made sausages, smoked meats, and premium cuts.

In an Instagram post, founder Ping Ho announced the closure. He explained that the restaurant chain will be focused on the growth of Marrow in Eastern Market and Marrow Detroit Provisions. “As part of this transition, our final day of dinner service at West Village will be June 7,” the post read.

Ho reflected on the West Village location’s opening in 2018 and its role in the community. He encouraged the community to visit the West Village location and grab a meal before its June closure.

“Birmingham will run through Memorial Day weekend, after which the location will pivot to a new concept—one where Marrow will still have a presence. More details on that transition to come,” Ping Ho assured the community.

He also thanked the community and its staff, along with Chef Sarah Welch and Chef Eddie Moreau. In the post, he mentioned a special note for Chef Eddie and said, “Eddie joined us five years ago—and what a five years it has been. He told us from the start that his time with us would close in Summer 2026 when his wife, Leah, graduated from medical school. They’re heading to Florida to begin their residency in June, and we couldn’t be happier for them both. Congrats, Leah.”

A Legacy of the Award-Winning Restaurant

The restaurant was awarded four James Beard Award nominations over its eight years of service. According to the BridgeDetroit, in 2023, the restaurant was a James Beard finalist for Best Midwest Restaurant, and Chef Sarah Welch was a finalist for the Best Chef in the Great Lakes region.

Marrow was named Eater Detroit’s Best New Restaurant for 2018 and landed on Bon Appétit’s America’s Best New Restaurants list in 2019, stated the 1051thebounce report.

In the official announcement, Ping Ho emphasized that, “We have a beautiful, purpose-built butcher shop and restaurant just a few miles away in Eastern Market, and we hope you’ll continue to be part of our family there.”

Even though the West Village chapter comes to an end, Marrow Detroit will continue to serve the Detroit community with its restaurant in Eastern Market.
