Mother’s Tacos, a Northern California-based taco shop inspired by all mothers and one dreamy trip to Mexico City, is getting ready to open a new location in Ventura at 1177 E. Thompson Blvd—Suite 101.

The company’s second location is set to open near the heart of Downtown Ventura, according to Eater Los Angeles. This marks the first time Mother’s Tacos will establish itself in Southern California, and it seems they are preparing for an opening sooner rather than later. The restaurant is seeking candidates for all positions at the new location, which is expected to open in mid-April 2025.

This venture is a significant achievement for founders Charles Whittaker and Benedict “Ben” Koenig, who launched the concept in 2023. They have brought on Gabe Garcia, who has experience from Tierra Sur at Herzog Cellars and Highly Likely, to serve as the executive chef and general manager. Whittaker and Koenig are collaborating with Mexico City’s Gospel Studio to design the branding and interior, featuring vibrant red accents, curved concrete, and light wood tables.

“We have been busy building and evolving the ‘Mothers’ experience over these last few months, and we’re super stoked on WHERE we landed and WHO we landed,” according to an Instagram post from earlier this year. “The changes set us back a bit on time, but we’d rather do it right than do it fast. [Garcia] is at the helm for our first venture into the 805, and he’ll be the homie responsible for putting out some incredible, soulful, and nostalgic Mexican food and for creating the familia vibe that is in our DNA.”

Mother’s Tacos specializes in authentic Mexico City tacos, crafted with “Amor de madre” in a typical taquería setting. Customers can expect the same menu at the Napa location: street tacos, delicious desserts like churros with dipping chocolate, and a full bar. The team announced earlier this year on Instagram that the new location will maintain the same welcoming atmosphere as its original site.

“We’re staying true to our taqueria y churreria roots with fresh, handmade tortillas, trompo, al carbon meats, and delicious salsas, but will also be rounding out the menu with some incredible family-style dishes like mesquite-grilled Tomahawk steak con salsa macha butter or whole duck carnitas and main plates like a chicken mole poblano or calabasita,” the post continues. “Not to mention, we’ll be serving some amazing apps like grilled pulpo, aguachile, and snapper ceviche.”
