A longstanding and iconic BBQ joint, Shorty’s BBQ, confirmed the closure of its South Miami location. After 75 years of service, the restaurant will serve its last meal at the end of December. Shorty’s BBQ’s locations in West Miami and Davie will remain open.
Shorty’s BBQ is Bidding Farewell to Dadeland
Shorty’s BBQ is an historic landmark Miami restaurant, well known for its slow-cooked and wood-fired Southern flavors. The flagship location of the restaurant on South Dixie Highway was founded in 1951 by Mr. E.L. “Shorty” Allen. The original building burned down in 1972, and the restaurant was rebuilt at the same site two years later.
Over the years of its operation, the restaurant has built a strong reputation because of its age-old Southern hospitality and cooking techniques. The restaurant serves classic items like baked mac and cheese, smoked wings, BBQ pork, and Philly cheesesteak.
After more than seven decades of service, Shorty’s BBQ at 9200 S Dixie Highway in South Miami will shut down permanently. The restaurant team shared the closure news on social media and on its official website.
“Our Dadeland location’s last day of business will be Sunday, December 27, 2026,” the restaurant announced.
They thanked the community and customers for their support and wrote, “As we prepare to say goodbye to our iconic US 1 Dadeland location, we want to thank everyone who has been part of our journey.”

Bird Road and Davie Locations Remain Open
While the South Miami location is saying goodbye, Shorty’s BBQ will continue to serve the community with its other two locations.
According to the restaurant post, both restaurants have been recently updated and will serve the same old Shorty’s BBQ flavors and hospitality. The team invites the community to visit the West Miami location at 11575 SW 40th Street and the Davie location at 5989 S. University Drive.
“Your love, memories, and support mean everything to us,” added the team in the farewell message.
Until the closure of the South Miami location, the team encourages the community to stop by and celebrate the 75 years of legacy of the restaurant.
