One of New York City’s longstanding fine dining restaurants has announced its permanent closure. Chef-owner Tom Colicchio announced that Craft will permanently close on June 27. The restaurant has served the community for the last 25 years.
Craft Restaurant Announces Closure
Craft is located at 43 E 19th St in New York. The restaurant was established in 2001 and earned three-star NYT reviews, James Beard Awards, and international acclaim. On June 4, the owner, Tom Colicchio, announced the closure of Craft on social media.
In his announcement, Colicchio described Craft as a successful “radical experiment.” The restaurant is known for serving a shared, connected experience and the best food at the same time. The owner attributed the quality to some of the best connections. The post read, “The experiment was possible because we were in a relationship with the best-of-the-best farmers, fishermen, artisans, and food producers.”
Over the years, diners have frequently praised the restaurant’s hospitality and service. The restaurant’s hospitality has also been recognized in media coverage over the years. In the announcement, Colicchio also thanked diners for supporting Craft throughout its 25-year run.
Economic changes over the past 25 years have contributed to the closure decision. The owner cited, “We struggled to keep up with the growing costs of a lease in a neighborhood that, over 25 years, became New York’s restaurant gold coast.”
As New York City’s dining landscape has changed, it is time to make way for new experiments and new ideas that can compete in today’s attention economy. The owner encouraged patrons to visit the restaurant in its final days.
The post ended with, “As a special thanks to those who join us for what is bound to be a month-long party, we are offering a gift of all wines at 50%.”

The Legacy of Craft: How It Shaped American Fine Dining
Craft follows the concept that it would be a place where the best ingredients will shine. The restaurant, in the Flatiron District, is known for its seasonal, market-driven approach. Craft’s philosophy, sourcing heavily from the Union Square Greenmarket, helped pioneer ingredient-driven fine dining in the nation.
Craft became one of New York City’s most celebrated fine-dining destinations. The menu exemplifies Craft’s focus on simplicity and seasonal menus. Guests can start by sampling dishes like Tuna Tartare with cucumber and sea urchin vinaigrette, Ricotta Agnolotti, or Wild Mushroom Risotto topped with parmesan.
Entrées highlight some of the finest seafood and meats. Diners can enjoy Spice Roasted Lobster, Roasted Heritage Chicken, Braised Short Rib, and Roasted Sirloin, served with onion tarte tatin and black garlic.
Craft also has a six-course tasting menu, offered seasonally, prepared by Colicchio. A well-stocked beverage list includes seasonal cocktails, classic favorites, a huge selection of wines, and home-brewed desserts to complement the food program.
Fans and customers of Craft are left in shock with the restaurant’s closure announcement. Through comments on the closure announcement post, patrons thanked the restaurant and shared their experiences.
One of the customers praised the restaurant, writing, “Craft is legendary and set the bar for so many that followed. Thank you for nourishing and taking care of us for so many years!”
Another comment appreciated Tom’s vision, “You were the first chef I ever heard define the difference between culinary art and craft. And while you excelled at the craft, you also made that an art. Above all, I honor you for being true to your vision and ideals from beginning to end.”
