Portland’s beloved Swiss-inspired restaurant, Alpenrausch, is closing. The restaurant announced the closure on social media, where it quickly drew reactions from the community expressing disappointment.

Alpenrausch to Close After a Short Run in Portland

Alpenrausch announced it will close at the end of this month. The popular Swiss-inspired restaurant opened in late 2023. It was soon named one of the best new restaurants in the U.S., gaining quick popularity.

The restaurant operated for just over two years after opening in late 2023. The closure was announced on social media, though no reason was provided. Instead, it reminisced about the journey until now and thanked everyone who was a part of it.

Alpenrausch was created by Elias Cairo of Olympia Provisions and was inspired by his years in Switzerland. The name reflects both ‘mountain exhilaration’ and the pleasant buzz of a good drink. The concept blended rustic Alpine influences with modern Portland style and quickly became a local favorite.

The restaurant is known for its concept and its exciting menu. Specialties included cheese-forward dishes such as fondue, raclette, venison tartare, and kaiserschmarrn. The drink menu is curated with alpine spirits, German wines, digestifs, and signature cocktails.
